Le Isole Borromee comprendono tre isole vere e proprie ( Isola Madre, la più grande, Isola Bella, dedicata da Carlo III Borromeo a sua moglie Isabella, Isola dei Pescatori, così chiamata per la principale attività da sempre qui praticata), un Isolino, quello di San Giovanni, posto proprio davanti a Verbania e un isolotto, la Malghera, poco più di uno scoglio disabitato.
